Over a year after the funding to operate the Citizens Program in Boston was lost, several pairs are still getting together to celebrate the holiday season and their friendships that have lasted the test of time.
On December 19th, nearly 20 people gathered together at DJs at the Garden for the annual Citizens Holiday Party. The event was comprised of pairs enjoying drinks, appetizers, laughs, and memories.
The get together was planned by two former Best Buddies staff members, Peter Obersheimer and Brant Martin, who are the founding members of the Citizens Volunteer Committee. The Committee was formed after the state office lost the funding to sustain the Citizens Program Manager position.
The hope was that these volunteers would continue to inspire the buddy pairs to fulfill the mission of Best Buddies despite the loss of funding, by offering quarterly outing for pairs to do as a group.
In the last year, pairs have stayed involved by attending Best Buddies Massachusetts sponsored events, going to a Red Sox game, exploring the Science Museum, and watching a Bruin’s game. Without the support of a Program Manager, Best Buddies is unable to make new matches, however we are pleased to see the pairs that had already been matched continuing to maintain their friendships.
